12 pro-Iranian fighters were killed in an airstrike in the eastern part of Syria, another country in the violent Middle East region. Many others were injured. However, it is not yet known who exactly carried out this attack.
On Sunday (September 29), the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported this information.
The agency said airstrikes were carried out from “unknown sources” on military positions in the Syrian city of Deir ez-Zor and its eastern region and the Bokamal region on the border with Iraq. 12 pro-Iran fighters were killed.
Five military positions near Deir ez-Zor airport were also attacked. However, so far no one has claimed responsibility for these attacks, said the monitoring organization.
Since the start of the civil war in Syria in 2011, Iran has been providing military aid to the country. On the other hand, Israel has carried out hundreds of airstrikes in Syria targeting pro-Iranian groups. The US has also carried out numerous strikes targeting Iran-backed groups in the region.
Israel does not usually comment directly on strikes in Syria. However, they have repeatedly stated that Israel will not allow Iran’s presence in Syria to increase.
Israel has recently carried out heavy bombing raids on the positions of the Iran-backed armed group Hezbollah in southern Lebanon. This raised fears of a larger regional war.
The Syrian Observatory reported that the Israeli military has carried out several attacks targeting Hezbollah’s weapons supply routes along the Syria-Lebanon border.
