Dhaka: Tragedy struck in Bangladesh as a massive fire engulfed a six-storey building housing restaurants, claiming the lives of at least 46 individuals and leaving dozens injured, according to statements from the health minister on Friday.
The blaze, suspected to have been triggered by a gas leak or stove malfunction, erupted in a biryani restaurant in the capital on Thursday. Despite the efforts of 13 firefighting units, it rapidly spread, taking two hours to bring under control.
Health Minister Samanta Lal Sen informed reporters that hospitals are currently treating 22 individuals for severe burn injuries, all of whom are in critical condition. “We are trying our best to save their lives,” Sen stated, highlighting the critical nature of the situation.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina expressed shock and grief over the incident, directing authorities to ensure swift treatment for the injured.
Survivors shared harrowing tales of escape, with Mohammad Altaf recounting his narrow getaway and the loss of two colleagues. “I went to the kitchen, broke a window, and jumped to save myself,” he revealed, adding that a cashier and server who alerted people to evacuate during the initial stages perished in the blaze.
Firefighters employed cranes to rescue individuals trapped in the charred building, and efforts are ongoing to clear debris and extinguish any remaining hotspots, according to fire officials.
Meanwhile, grieving relatives gathered at hospitals to receive the bodies of the deceased, with mourners congregating outside the emergency department to bid farewell to their loved ones.
