Chinese scientists have succeeded in producing water from soil collected from the moon.
Recently, Reuters reported this information in a report citing the country’s state-owned news agency CCTV.
In 2020, China sent a lunar rover with astronauts to the moon for the first time. The name of this lunar mission was Cheng’i-5.
Astronauts who took part in the mission brought enough soil to the moon. Studies have shown that the soil contains a large amount of hydrogen along with various minerals, and when high temperatures are applied to the soil, hydrogen reacts with the minerals to form water vapor.
According to the CCTV report, ‘After three years of deep scientific research, our scientists have come to know that it is possible to extract water from the soil of the moon. If in the near future people want to build a space station or research center on the lunar surface, this information will be very useful. This is a very important discovery.’
According to Chinese scientists, the method they used in the study can produce a minimum of 51 to a maximum of 76 liters of water per ton of soil on the moon.
In fact, China has been seeking to mine the lunar soil for years. The country is competing with the United States on this issue.
Bill Nelson, the top executive of the US space research agency NASA, recently warned Washington that if Beijing is not stopped, there is a danger that most of the mineral-rich areas of the Moon will be taken over by China in the future.
