Death toll rises to 50 in heavy rains in central China The death toll occurred on Monday due to the rains that started in late July. After the rescue and search operation, the country’s rescue officials confirmed the loss of life on Monday.
According to the country’s state-run CCTV report, 15 people are still missing in the city of Jijing in the central Hunan province.
At the end of last July, rain started in China under the influence of strong typhoon Geimi. The powerful typhoon hit the Philippines, Taiwan and China’s landlocked Hunan province.
Chinese authorities evacuated nearly 300,000 people last month and suspended public transport across eastern China. China faces extremely hostile weather during summer. However, at the same time heavy rains fell across the eastern and southern parts of the country and most of the northern regions saw persistent heat waves.
Last month, at least 38 people were killed when a highway bridge collapsed due to heavy rains in the country’s northern Shanxi province. China is the largest emitter of greenhouse gases in the world. This greenhouse gas is intensifying climate change and extreme weather around the world.
