The two political parties in the region, Hamas and Fatah, have announced that they will work together for the Palestinians in the ongoing war situation. They also agreed to form a post-war coalition government. They announced this through the mediation of China.

It is reported that the two main Palestinian political groups, Hamas and Fatah, have signed an agreement to form a ‘government of national unity’ to maintain control over Gaza after the end of the war. Leaders of the two groups signed the agreement in Beijing on Tuesday (July 23), brokered by China.

The matter came to light at a time when the news of the meeting of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu with US President Joe Biden is being heard.

According to media reports, the existing division of Fatah, Hamas and other parties and the current Palestinian situation were discussed in the closed-door meeting. However, although the details of the discussion have not been disclosed, it is said that they have agreed to improve their relations. At the same time, the leaders of both organizations expressed their determination to work together on the issue of independent Palestine.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said the deal, finalized in China on Tuesday after three days of intensive negotiations, would lead to the formation of an “interim government of national unity” to govern Gaza. The agreement was signed by long-term rivals Hamas, Fatah and 12 other Palestinian groups.

Mustafa Barghouti, secretary-general of the Palestine National Initiative, one of the 14 factions that signed the deal, told Al Jazeera the deal was better and far-reaching than any other agreement reached in recent years.

Fatah and Hamas have different positions on the Palestinian issue and international recognition. Fatah has controlled the West Bank since winning elections a decade and a half ago. On the other hand, Gaza is under the control of Hamas. After different results in the elections in two different regions, the division between the two parties became bigger with different demands. Several attempts were made to resolve the issue, but later it collapsed. However, Fatah protested at the international level without bringing forward the hostility with Hamas in the recent Israeli attack.
