India has created an artificial hive of bees on the Bangladesh border in Nadia, West Bengal. Basically, this step has been taken to prevent infiltration and smuggling of Bangladeshis.

In a report on Monday (September 9), Indian media News-18 said that 10 to 12 soldiers of the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) gathered at the border last week. There they were learning about beekeeping. At that time, they wore the necessary safety equipment on their heads and faces.

Pictures published in the media show several beekeeping boxes hanging on barbed wire.

The 32nd battalion of BSF is responsible for the security of the 46 km border with West Bengal. They hang these boxes. Their hope is that if a Bangladeshi intruder or a smuggler from either country comes near the barbed wire, the bees will attack them.

A BSF official said that they have been successful using this method. Infiltration or smuggling is almost nil.

Sujit Kumar, commandant of 32nd battalion, said, “Less than a year ago, from November 2023, we started beekeeping. It was a government project for village development. The thought of what can be done to prevent infiltration at the border comes to my mind.

Sujit Kumar also said, ‘We often see infiltration from Bangladesh by cutting the barbed wire. Apart from this, there are various other issues including cow smuggling. We are very surprised that after placing these boxes at the border, there has been almost zero infiltration and smuggling.”

A BSF official said that after one unit succeeds in this initiative, other units will take similar measures.
