Several Israeli tanks are stationed in the center of the southern Gaza city of Rafah. The tanks entered the city for the first time on Tuesday, nearly three weeks after the start of the operation.
Witnesses and local journalists in the city of Rafah said Israeli tanks had taken control of Al-Awda roundabout in the center of the city.
The Israeli army occupied the roundabout, which is only half a kilometer away from the Palestinian-Egyptian border to the south. There were signs of intense artillery fire.
Israel launched an offensive in Rafah three weeks ago, taking control of the border crossing with Egypt. Since then their tanks have searched around the city. Entered some eastern districts. But did not enter the city until now. In the meantime, the international media reported that Rafa would take a position in the center.
A witness sheltering with family members at Emirati Hospital on the west side of the city described how soldiers took up positions on top of a building above the square and started firing at any movement in the area.
On Sunday (May 26), Israeli forces carried out an airstrike on a tent in Rafah Tal As-Sultan. At least 45 Palestinians were killed, most of them women and children. The incident sparked worldwide condemnation.
