Jamaica recognized Palestine as a state

The Caribbean island nation of Jamaica recognized Palestine as a state amid the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas. The decision comes amid grave concern over Israel’s war in the Gaza Strip and the “continually deepening humanitarian crisis” in the Palestinian territories.

Jamaica’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade Kamina Johnson Smith confirmed this information in a statement on Tuesday.

According to the statement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Jamaica, Jamaica has decided to recognize the State of Palestine. The decision is consistent with Jamaica’s strong commitment to the principles of the United Nations Charter, which uphold mutual respect and peaceful coexistence among states as well as the recognition of the right of peoples to self-determination.

Jamaica’s foreign minister said his country wants to see “a peaceful resolution of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict through diplomatic negotiations rather than military action.”

Note that Jamaica is the 142nd country among the member states of the United Nations to recognize Palestine as a state.

After a meeting in Brussels, Belgium in the last week of March, the prime ministers of four European countries, Spain, Ireland, Slovenia and Malta, said that their countries are ready to recognize Palestine as an independent state. They said at the time that this was the only way to ensure peace and security in the war-torn region.
