A student has been arrested by the police for allegedly threatening to kill West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. The arrested student posted on social media threatening to shoot Mamata like former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
Indian media NDTV reported this information in a report on Monday.
A student from the state has been arrested by the Kolkata Police for posting inflammatory posts on social media inciting violence against West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, reports said. The accused student is a second year B.Com student.
According to NDTV, the name of the accused student is Kirti Sharma. He was arrested from Taltala on charges of publishing the name and picture of the doctor who died at RG Kar Hospital in Kolkata and threatening to kill Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
The complaint was originally filed against the student based on his Instagram post. Police arrested him later on Monday. He gave these posts from a handle called ‘KirtiSocial’ on Instagram. He is accused of encouraging others to kill Chief Minister Mamata, similar to the assassination of former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
The accused student’s post read, ‘Shoot Mamata Banerjee like Indira Gandhi. If you can’t do it, I won’t disappoint’. A number of Trinamool Congress supporters quickly drew the authorities’ attention to the matter.
Police also alleged that the accused student also revealed the identity and photograph of a 31-year-old post-graduate trainee doctor who was brutally raped and murdered on August 9 at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
According to Indian media, the accused student made several posts related to the RG tax incident from a handle called ‘KirtiSocial’ on Instagram. All three posts revealed the victim’s name and photo. It is also alleged that the posts were quite offensive.
Besides, a complaint was filed against him in the police station on the basis of two more posts. The two posts contained derogatory and abusive comments against Chief Minister Mamata.
After a complaint was filed based on the Instagram posts, the police started an investigation. The posts made by the accused student against the Chief Minister are very provocative. At any time, such comments can lead to social unrest and inter-group violence.
After the arrest, the accused is reportedly being interrogated by the police.
