The top leader of Hamas, Ismail Haniya, was killed in an attack last Wednesday (Tuesday night) in Tehran, Iran. Hamas blamed Israel for the killing. In the meantime, Hamas has announced that it will respond to Haniya’s murder. Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Khanani said Haniya’s blood will never be in vain. In this situation, two Iranian officials told the Telegraph on condition of anonymity that the Israeli intelligence agency Mossad hired Iranian agents to assassinate the head of Hamas’s political wing, Ismail Haniyeh. They were the ones who planted bombs in the three rooms of Hania’s residence.
It is known that there was a plan to kill Ismail Hania a few months ago. When Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi died in a helicopter crash in May this year, Hania traveled to Tehran to attend his funeral, which is when the assassination plot was planned.
Two Iranian officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, told the Telegraph that Ibrahim Raisi’s assassination was not possible due to the large crowd at his funeral and the large crowd where Haniya was staying at the time. Instead, Mossad agents placed bombs in three rooms, depending on where Haniya might be staying when he next visited Tehran.
Several officials who saw CCTV footage of the building where Ismail Haniyeh were staying said on condition of anonymity that Mossad agents entered several rooms within minutes to plant the bombs. At this time they tried to hide their identity.
The officials also said that the Mossad agents left Iran soon after. However, a number of them remained in Iran and some of them may have detonated the bomb planted in Haniya’s residence from outside. Haniya and one of her bodyguards died in the blast. Hania traveled to Tehran to attend the swearing-in ceremony of Iran’s new president, Massoud Pezeshkian.
“We are now certain that the Mossad hired its agents from the Ansar al-Mahdi Unit security unit,” said a high-ranking Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) official responsible for Haniya’s security, on condition of anonymity. This unit was responsible for Haniya.
The official also said, “We found out on further investigation that apart from Hania’s room, they were getting bombs in two other rooms. Another IRGC official said breaching the high-security system was too much of an insult for Iran. He said, it is still everyone’s question that how this incident could happen. I still don’t understand this. He said, “Something may have happened at a higher level, which we do not know.”
The first IRGC source, who did not want to be named, said that there is a blame game going on in the IRGC over this incident. IRGC commander Ismail Qani is expelling people from his forces, arresting and possibly even executing some.
