President Mohamed Muijju’s People’s National Congress (PNC) has won the parliamentary elections in the Maldives.
The results of 86 out of 93 constituencies have been declared. PNC won 66 of them.
Voting for the parliamentary elections started in the country from Sunday morning. Voting lasted for about 9 and a half hours. Meanwhile, the election commission announced the results of most of the constituencies.
Meanwhile, the Election Commission of Maldives announced the results of 86 out of 93 seats till 12:30 pm. Muizju’s party PNC has won 66 of these seats. Which is more than the number of seats required to form a single government in the country. On the other hand, PNC and its partners got eight seats in the outgoing parliament. However, as the country’s elections approached, it was thought to be easy for President Mohamed Muijzu. One of the reasons for this is that although the pro-Chinese Muijju is president, the control of parliament is in the hands of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), the party of his predecessor, Ibrahim Mohamed Saleh, who is pro-India.
As a result, it was considered a challenge for Muijju’s pro-China party to take control of the parliament.
Earlier in September last year, Mohammed Muijju won the presidential election by expressing his anti-India stance.
He took a pro-China stance like former Maldivian President Abdullah Yameen. Yameen was sentenced to 11 years in prison on corruption charges. However, he was released when the court canceled the sentence last week.
