Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman of Saudi Arabia spoke with Iran’s Interim President Mohammad Mokhbar. At this time, the two leaders invited each other to visit their respective countries. Accepted the invitation to visit Iran.
Iran’s state news agency reported that the phone conversation between Mohammed bin Salman and Mokhbar took place on Friday night. Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman telephoned Iran’s interim president to express his condolences over the death of former president Ibrahim Raisi.
During the conversation, the two leaders discussed bilateral relations and regional issues.
Iran’s interim president expressed his gratitude to bin Salman for his warm welcome to Iranian pilgrims and invited bin Salman to visit Tehran.
Bin Salman accepted the invitation and also invited Iran’s interim president to visit Riyadh.
According to international media reports, this will be the first visit by a member of the Saudi royal family to Tehran in two decades, signaling another step towards positive diplomatic relations after years of strain.
In 2016, Saudi-Iran officially severed their diplomatic relations. The Saudi government beheaded Shiite religious leader Nimr al-Nimr on charges of treason, leading to large-scale protests in Iran. Relations between the two countries hit rock bottom when protesters set fire to the Saudi embassy in Tehran. Since last year, this relationship has become normal again.
