Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President Pakistan Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif has resigned. On Monday (May 13), he resigned from the post of the head of the party.
This information was given in a report of the Pakistani media The Dawn.
After stepping down as PML-N president, Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif said it was time to return Nawaz Sharif to his rightful place as party president.
According to a source in the party, Shahbaz Sharif is not able to devote time to party work due to government engagement as Prime Minister. Former prime minister Nawaz Sharif will be elected as the president of the party in the central committee meeting.
According to a report by Geo News, a meeting of the central executive committee of the party has been called on May 18 after Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif resigned from the post of PML-N president. PML-N Secretary General Ahsan Iqbal sent notice of the meeting to all members of the executive committee.
Earlier, in 2018, a Pakistani court sentenced Nawaz to prison in several corruption cases. He also lost the post of party chief by the court verdict. Because a Supreme Court bench headed by the then Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Mian Saqib Nisar ruled that under Articles 62 and 63 of the country’s constitution, a disqualified person cannot serve as the head of a political party.
Nawaz Sharif returned to the country last October after being in voluntary exile for four years. After getting bail in all the cases in the High Court, he returned home from UK. Nawaz’s party formed a coalition government with some parties including the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) after the national elections of Pakistan on February 8 this year.
