A significant geopolitical development is underway as India initiates the withdrawal of its military personnel from the Maldives, responding to the new pro-China president’s directive. President Mohamed Muizzu, who assumed office in September, pledged to expel Indian security forces deployed in the Maldives, a move that signals a notable shift in regional alliances.
The Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) confirmed the departure of 25 Indian troops stationed in the southernmost atoll of Addu ahead of the agreed-upon withdrawal starting on March 10. The pullout, encompassing 89 Indian troops and support staff, is scheduled to conclude by May 10, as per the mutual agreement between the two nations.
While the Maldivian defence ministry attributes the move to strengthen bilateral ties, it comes on the heels of the Maldives signing a “military assistance” deal with China last week. The agreement includes Chinese training for Maldivian staff, drawing attention to the evolving dynamics in the Indian Ocean region.
China’s foreign ministry spokesman, Wang Wenbin, expressed support for the Maldives, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding territorial sovereignty and fostering friendly exchanges. This move aligns with China’s broader strategy of expanding influence in the strategically vital Indian Ocean, raising concerns in New Delhi about Beijing’s growing presence in the region.
India has long considered the Indian Ocean archipelago within its sphere of influence, but the Maldives’ shifting alignment towards China has strained relations. President Muizzu’s visit to Beijing in January resulted in various economic agreements, raising questions about the balance of power in the region.
The withdrawal of Indian troops from the Maldives takes place against a backdrop of heightened tension between India and China, not only in the Indian Ocean but also in the broader South Asian region. India’s recent reinforcement of naval forces on the strategically important Lakshadweep islands indicates a proactive stance in response to evolving regional dynamics.
As the Maldives prepares for parliamentary elections on April 21, the outcome may further shape the geopolitical landscape, with India closely monitoring developments in its neighboring region to safeguard its strategic interests.
