Indonesia, March 21: Prabowo Subianto has been elected as the president of Indonesia, the world’s third largest democracy. The Election Commission of the country officially announced this on Wednesday.

Subianto received 58.6 percent of the vote. Former Jakarta governor Anis Baswedan got 24.9 percent and former Central Java governor Ganjar Pronovo got 16.5 percent.

His rivals, Anis and Gonjar, have promised to submit complaints to the Constitutional Court alleging irregularities and fraud during the elections. But Prabowo’s legal team is confident the charge won’t hold up in court because of his majority and wide margin of victory.

In Indonesia, election disputes can be brought to court within three days of the announcement of official results.

Two other candidates have alleged fraud and irregularities in the electoral process, as has the vice presidential candidate of President Joko Widodo’s son. The popular outgoing president is serving his second term. But he could not participate in the election. But his son’s candidacy is seen as a sign of his unabashed support for Subianto.

Subianto, 72, was widely predicted to win the presidency in his third attempt. He will take over as president in October after a transition period.

According to experts, his popularity has increased because of his excellent speeches, evidence of a strong personality as defense minister and Widodo’s support.
