Turkey has imposed a ban on the export of a number of goods to Israel until a cease-fire is declared in the Palestinian Gaza Strip. This is Ankara’s first major move against Israel in the six-month war in Gaza.
The announcement was made in a statement by the Turkish Ministry of Commerce on Tuesday (April 9).
According to the statement of the ministry, this ban has been imposed on the export of 54 products of different categories. The ban will remain in place until a ceasefire is declared in Gaza.
It is reported that the banned products include iron, marble, steel, fertiliser, construction materials, machinery and aviation fuel.
Türkiye has been condemning the Israeli operation in Gaza since the beginning. They called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza. Türkiye has also supported Israel’s demands for justice for the genocide and sent thousands of tons of aid to Gaza.
However, despite speaking harshly against Israel, Türkiye has maintained trade relations with the country. Dissatisfaction has arisen within Turkey with this trade relationship.
Israel recently rejected Turkey’s request to airdrop aid to Gaza. After that, Türkiye imposed a ban on the export of Israeli products.
In response, Israel’s foreign minister said, “Türkiye has unilaterally violated the trade agreement with Israel. Türkiye is once again undermining the economic interests of its own people to support Hamas. We will respond to that.”
It should be noted that Israel claimed that about 1200 people were killed and 250 people were taken hostage in the attack of Hamas on October 7. In response to this attack, Israel launched an invasion of Gaza. According to the Gaza Health Ministry, the number of Palestinians killed in the six-month Israeli occupation has exceeded 33,000.
