More than 1,000 fighters of the Palestinian independence armed group Hamas are being treated in various hospitals in Turkey, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said. Besides, he termed the activities of Hamas against Israel as a ‘resistance movement’.
Erdogan spoke at a press conference after meeting with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis on Monday (May 13). At the time, he added, Greece views Hamas as a terrorist organization — which torments it.
However, a Turkish official later said on condition of anonymity that more than 1,000 Palestinians are receiving medical treatment in Turkey. President Erdoğan mistook them for Hamas fighters.
This official said that President Erdoğan was wrong. He explained that 1,000 people from Gaza are receiving treatment here, not members of Hamas.
The Prime Minister of Greece, standing by Erdogan, said that Greece and Turkey cannot agree on all aspects of the Gaza war. But Greece agrees on the need for a long-term ceasefire in Gaza.
Both Türkiye and Greece are members of NATO, the US-led military alliance. However, despite being members of the same alliance, tensions often arise between the two countries over various issues. The Prime Minister of Greece went to Turkey to discuss these tensions.
At the end of the talks, Turkish President Erdoğan said that the problems they have are not “unsolvable problems”.
