In a heartfelt celebration of Vesak Day, Sri Lankan High Commissioner to India, Kshenuka Dhireni Senewiratne, used the occasion to highlight the timeless relevance of Buddhism’s teachings in today’s turbulent world. Speaking at the high commission in New Delhi, Senewiratne underscored how the profound messages of peace, non-violence, and compassion inherent in Buddhism can guide international efforts towards reconciliation and unity.
The event, marked by a stunning display of lights and a large white Vesak lantern, was not just a commemoration of Buddha’s birth, enlightenment, and death but a call to action for addressing contemporary global conflicts. “In an international environment marred by conflict and division, reflecting on the Buddha’s doctrine is more pertinent than ever,” Senewiratne stated. Her words resonated deeply, suggesting that the ancient wisdom of Buddhism holds keys to resolving modern issues.
Senewiratne took the opportunity to recall the historical and cultural bonds between India and Sri Lanka, noting that these ties were strengthened significantly through Buddhism which reached Sri Lanka during the reign of Emperor Ashoka. She emphasized, “Sri Lanka and India will forever be bound by the unbreakable bonds of our countries’ Buddhist heritage,” pointing to the enduring cultural and spiritual connections that link the two nations.
Highlighting the broader impact of Buddhism, Senewiratne reminded the audience of significant Buddhist sites across South Asia, including Lumbini, Bodh Gaya, and Kushinagar. She noted, “The Buddha’s life events in these regions have shaped the cultural landscapes not just in Sri Lanka and India, but across South and Southeast Asia.”
This year’s Vesak celebration also marked the 25th anniversary of the United Nations General Assembly Resolution 54/115, which internationally recognized Vesak. Senewiratne expressed gratitude for the collective international effort that brought Vesak to the global stage, acknowledging India’s pivotal support in this initiative.
India’s Minister of State for External Affairs, Meenakshi Lekhi, who was present at the event, reiterated India’s commitment to the principles of Buddhism and their relevance in fostering global peace.
As nations grapple with ongoing conflicts and humanitarian crises, the Vesak Day celebrations in New Delhi served as a reminder of the enduring power of Buddha’s teachings. Senewiratne’s address was a poignant call to embrace the principles of non-violence and compassion, urging the global community to seek solutions inspired by ancient wisdom in pursuit of a more peaceful and harmonious world.
