West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has called for talks to resolve the ongoing tension between India and Bangladesh. She also hopes for a stable situation after overcoming the unrest. She also explained the reason for her earlier request to the central government to deploy peacekeepers in Bangladesh. She said these things in an interview given to News18 Bangla on Friday.
Mamata said, sit down and see the problems between India and Bangladesh for yourself. There are many forums internationally for this. But it is not right to stop negotiations. She also said, I think the two countries should talk to each other and overcome the unrest and come to a stable situation. This is my number one point. The second point is that the (Indian) Ministry of Foreign Affairs should give a statement in the Parliament session. The latest situation in Bangladesh should be explained. This should be done for all of us to know. Earlier, the rule was that if any incident happened anywhere during the Parliament, even if the Prime Ministers went abroad, they would come and give a statement in the Parliament. (However) since the Parliament has been in session for so long, we have not seen any statement on it. It should have been given in detail. Then we would have known (the matter in detail).
Mamata said, Thirdly, why did I talk about peacekeepers? I said this because whenever there is unrest in any country or peace is disturbed, the UN has its own peacekeeping force, which consists of people from different countries of the world. They are called peacekeepers. When there was trouble in Sri Lanka too, the peacekeepers came. So, if relations with India (Bangladesh) have deteriorated a lot, then India can tell the UN to send your peacekeepers. At least so that the people get security.
