Imran Khan suspends ‘anti-government movement’

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder and former Prime Minister Imran Khan has suspended the ‘anti-government movement’ announced for a few days at the request of his party leaders.

Imran Khan’s sister Aleema Khan made the announcement while talking to reporters outside Adiala Jail on Tuesday.

Aleema Khan said, ‘Imran Khan is worried about the future of the country. For this, he will wait for a few more days’.

Imran Khan had earlier warned the government in an ex post that if his demands were not met, he would launch an ‘anti-government movement’.

His demands include a judicial inquiry into the May 9, 2023 riots and the November 26 crackdown on PTI protesters, and the release of ‘political prisoners’.

Negotiation initiative and structure

Imran Khan has formed a five-member negotiation committee to discuss the matter in detail. The members of the committee are Omar Ayub Khan, Ali Amin Gandapur, Sahibzada Hamid Reza, Salman Akram Raza and Asad Qaiser.

There were reports of talks between the government and PTI after the meeting of PTI leader Asad Qaiser with the Speaker of the National Assembly of Pakistan Ayaz Sadiq last week.

However, Asad Qaiser denied this news and said, ‘I went to the speaker’s residence only to express my condolences. There was no talk of talks’.

Meanwhile, the Shahbaz Sarkar also confirmed that no talks have started with the PTI yet.

Imran Khan’s conditions for the movement

Imran Khan’s lawyer Faisal Chaudhry said that Imran Khan has presented seven arguments in favor of the movement. Which, according to him, prove the legitimacy of the call for an anti-government movement.

He also said that those who are in the opposition and want to meet Imran will be welcome.

He also expressed concern that the government may prevent opposition leaders from meeting Imran in prison.

Imran Khan had prepared a protest against the current government but postponed it at the request of PTI leaders. The next direction of the protest depends on the fulfillment of his demands.
