The former Prime Minister of Malaysia called on the international community to help the Rohingya refugees. Mahathir Mohamad.
He said that Malaysia has sheltered many Rohingya refugees. Rohingya refugees should be resettled in other countries to alleviate their plight.
Dr. Mahathir said in a Facebook post that although Myanmar was ruled by the Burmese people, it was home to many other ethnic groups. Rohingyas have the right to become citizens of Myanmar, although they have not been granted it.
He said that each ethnic group in Myanmar is living separately. People of all ethnicities living in that country are citizens of Myanmar and should have the same rights as other citizens of the country. It is a sad fact that there are some people who are not considered citizens. They are divided, each ethnic group living in their own territory.
Mahathir Mohamad said the vast majority of the Burmese people were Buddhist and were known to be tolerant. But they were never tolerant towards the Muslim community there. Rohingya Muslims have not harmed other ethnic groups or opposed the Myanmar government. However, the Myanmar junta continues to attack them and their homes. Myanmar’s junta attacked their villages and towns, killing people and destroying their homes. Because of this, the Rohingyas have been forced to move to the neighboring country of Bangladesh.
He highlighted the plight of Rohingya refugees, especially the sick and elderly as well as women and children.
Mahathir Mohamad also said that while Malaysians should be concerned about the massacre of Palestinians in Gaza, they should also consider the plight of Rohingya refugees. We appeal to the Myanmar junta to allow the Rohingya refugees to return to their villages in Myanmar.
