Former Prime Minister of Pakistan Imran Khan has applied as a candidate for the post of Chancellor of Oxford University. Imran, accused in several cases, is now lodged in Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail. However, he announced his candidacy to participate in this election from prison.
Why did Imran Khan suddenly decide to elect the post of Chancellor of Oxford? When BBC contacted Zulfi Bukhari, Imran Khan’s adviser on this matter, he said, ‘Why Imran Khan will not participate in that election? It is a very prestigious post. He (Imran Khan) was the chancellor of Bradford University in the past and he performed that important duty with utmost integrity. So he is the most suitable person for this post (Chancellor of Oxford University).’
However, the British media BBC tried to find out what is the real motive behind Imran’s desire to become a chancellor of Oxford after being ousted in a vote of no confidence.
Experts say, if Imran Khan is elected to this position, it will be quite significant. At the same time, it will have an impact on the political and diplomatic level. This Oxford election can be a beacon of new hope for Imran, who has been cornered in Pakistan’s politics.
The author of the book “Political Conflict in Pakistan” written about the political conflict of Pakistan, Professor Dr. Mohammad Wasim told the BBC, “There have been two to three attempts to appoint him to this post before.” In this situation, if Imran Khan becomes the chancellor of a reputed university like Oxford, then a lot of sympathy will be generated for him.’
Wasim also thinks that Pakistan government will not be able to repress Imran if he is elected as Acharya of Oxford. Because then any decision against Imran will be considered as ‘anti-British action’. Apart from this, this analyst feels that this could be a ‘good opportunity’ for Imran Khan to ‘leave the country with dignity’ after being freed from prison.
Meanwhile, Pakistan’s former foreign secretary Shamshad Ahmed Khan also indicated the diplomatic complications between Pakistan and the United Kingdom on the Imran Khan issue, “If the Pakistani government tries to block Imran Khan’s path even after the election and does not allow him to go out, it may create diplomatic complications.”
Although Dr. Wasim and former Pakistani ambassador Abdul Basit disagree with this view. They are of the view that there is no possibility of a major rupture in the UK’s relationship with Pakistan due to any particular person.
