Israel continues to protest for the third day demanding an immediate ceasefire and the release of hostages.
The protests in Tel Aviv have put Prime Minister Netanyahu under pressure. However, Netanyahu said on Monday night that he will not yield to any pressure in indirect negotiations with Hamas.
The bodies of six hostages were recovered a few hours before the Israeli army arrived in Gaza a few days ago. Protests have started in Israel.
Protesters say time is running out. The rest of the hostages in Gaza should be released quickly. As many as 100 people are believed to be still held hostage in Gaza.
new proposal
The United States has said that a new proposal for a cease-fire in Gaza is being prepared. They are drafting the proposal with the help of mediators from Egypt and Qatar.
US National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said, “The killing of six hostages in Gaza shows that there is an urgent need to negotiate a ceasefire.” We believe we will be able to reach a ceasefire agreement.
US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said it was time to make a deal. The United States, along with Egypt and Qatar, will work toward that goal in the coming days.
Miller said many of the hostages are still in Gaza. They are waiting for this deal. The people of Israel are not willing to wait any longer. Palestinians are the most affected by this war. This agreement needs to be done quickly for them too.
Kirby and Miller’s response came after Netanyahu’s statement. Netanyahu also said on Monday that Israel’s army will not withdraw from the border between Gaza and Egypt. Hamas has said that the withdrawal of these troops is a prerequisite for any agreement.
In response to the question of whether Netanyahu is showing sufficient initiative in terms of the release of prisoners, US President Biden simply said, ‘No’.
Remarks by the President of the Security Council
Slovenia’s ambassador to the United Nations and Security Council president Samuel Zubogar said their patience with the Gaza ceasefire talks is running out. If there is no ceasefire, the Security Council will consider taking action, he said.
He said that the Security Council is of the opinion that either there is an agreement, then the Council will judge it or the Council will do whatever it takes for this agreement.
Whatever it is, it will be done by September, he said. It is not what we want. The real reason is that patience is running out.
