Germany suspends new arms exports to Israel over legal challenge This information was reported by Reuters based on an analysis of government data and a source close to the German Finance Ministry.
According to a source close to the finance ministry, a senior government official said the process of approving arms exports to Israel has been held up by lawsuits and political pressure. Because there have been allegations that human rights laws have been violated with these exported weapons.
The German finance ministry did not comment on the matter, but the country’s government issued a statement after the Reuters report was published. Government spokesman Steffen Hebstreit said there was no German arms export embargo against Israel.
Although the German government claims so, official data says otherwise. According to Finance Ministry data, Germany approved arms exports to Israel worth 326.5 million euros last year. This included military equipment and weapons. This is 10 times more than in 2022.
However, this year the approval of arms exports has decreased drastically. As of August 21, only 14.5 million euros have been sanctioned. Out of this, only 32 thousand 449 euros have been approved for the armament department. The data was provided in response to the ministry’s parliamentary question.
