Ruchira Kamboj, India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, reaffirmed India’s commitment to a two-state solution for the Israel-Palestine conflict during an address at the United Nations General Assembly Meeting on the Use of Veto. Kamboj emphasized that India’s position has been consistent and clear on the matter.
“India firmly supports a two-state solution, facilitating the Palestinian people’s freedom in an independent country while ensuring the security needs of Israel are duly considered. The enduring peace we seek can only be achieved through direct and meaningful negotiations between both sides on final status issues,” Kamboj stated.
Calling for immediate de-escalation, Kamboj urged parties to eschew violence, release hostages, and avoid provocative actions, emphasizing the need for conditions conducive to the early resumption of direct peace negotiations.
Expressing concern over the ongoing conflict’s impact, especially on civilians, Kamboj condemned the loss of lives, particularly among women and children, leading to an alarming humanitarian crisis. She stressed the importance of respecting international law and humanitarian principles in all circumstances.
Reiterating India’s stance on terrorism, Kamboj condemned the triggering terror attacks in Israel on October 7, 2023, calling for unequivocal condemnation. She emphasized India’s unwavering position against terrorism in all its forms and manifestations and demanded the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages.
Addressing the humanitarian aspect of the conflict, Kamboj called for an immediate scale-up of humanitarian aid to Gaza, urging all parties to collaborate in these efforts. She welcomed the UN and international community’s initiatives and highlighted India’s ongoing provision of humanitarian aid to Palestine.
The Gaza conflict, stemming from a Hamas attack on October 7, 2023, has escalated tensions. Israel’s offensive, aimed at Hamas infrastructure, seeks to eliminate the entire terror group while minimizing civilian casualties. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has firmly stated Israel’s reluctance to agree to a ceasefire, characterizing such calls as demands for Israeli surrender to Hamas.
Recent reports from CNN suggest a potential breakthrough in negotiations, with Hamas adjusting key demands and temporarily halting hostilities. A meeting in Paris involving US, Egyptian, and Israeli intelligence chiefs, along with the Qatari prime minister, indicated progress in resolving major obstacles, potentially leading to a preliminary agreement and the release of Israeli hostages.
