The United States is willing to consider delisting Yemen’s Houthis from the terrorist list. But for that they have to accept a condition.
In an online press briefing on Wednesday (April 3), US President Joe Biden’s special envoy to Yemen, Tim Landerking, said that if the Houthis stop their attacks in the Red Sea, they will no longer be called “terrorists”. News from NDTV.
“I hope we can resolve this diplomatically,” Lenderking said. If we are to move away from calling the Houthis terrorists in order to resolve our diplomatic tensions, they must stop attacking them at sea.
The comments suggest the US is once again turning to diplomatic solutions after nearly three months of airstrikes on Houthi installations in Yemen. They have failed to use force to stop Houthi missile and drone attacks on commercial shipping in the Red Sea.
However, the US says it has managed to reduce the Houthis’ military capabilities.
Ansarullah earlier in mid-January; The US State Department has designated the Houthis, commonly known as the Houthis, as a special ‘terrorist group’.
Washington labeled them terrorists after the US and UK launched a joint strike in response to the attack in the Red Sea.
The Houthi rebels launched attacks on ships in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden in mid-November to pressure Israel to end its war against Hamas in Gaza. Since then most Western shipping companies have avoided this route.
The Houthi rebels said they would continue their attacks there.
Lenderking spoke to reporters from Muscat, the capital of Oman. Oman has long engaged in diplomatic mediation with the Houthis and the West.
The US ambassador said he spoke with Oman’s foreign minister, Sayyid Badr al-Busaidi. He said that they discussed ways to restore peace among the people of Yemen and normalize diplomatic relations with the Houthis.
