Canadian police have arrested three Indians for killing Canadian citizen and pro-Khalistan separatist Hardeep Singh Nizar.
The country’s local media reported that they were arrested on Friday (May 3). Canadian authorities allege that the arrested men carried out the killings as part of a hit squad commissioned by the Indian government.
Canada is a member of the ‘Five Eyes’, an intelligence alliance made up of four other countries – Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and the United States. These partner countries share extensive intelligence with each other in one of the world’s most integrated multilateral systems.
Meanwhile, the Washington Post published a report on April 30 titled ‘An assassination plot on US soil reveals the dark side of Modi’s India’. It said the Indian government’s Research and Analytical Wing (RAW) planned to assassinate pro-Khalistan Sikh leader Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, who was living legally in the United States, but the attempt failed.
“This is a serious matter and we take it very, very seriously,” White House spokeswoman Karin John-Pierre told reporters. We will continue to raise our concerns.
Canadian police arrested three Indians in connection with the murder at a time when the Lok Sabha elections were underway in India. Political analysts believe that if the incident is proved to be true, it will be a boomerang for India.
Pro-Khalistan slogans were raised at a rally attended by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in Toronto recently to celebrate Khalsa Day. Apart from the Prime Minister of Canada, Leader of the Opposition Pierre Poilievre and Mayor Olivia Chao were present at the event.
At the event, Trudeau assured the country’s Sikh community that the government is committed to protecting their rights and freedoms at all costs.
He said diversity is one of Canada’s greatest strengths.
