Ahmad al-Shara, head of the Syrian Military Operations Administration and the rebel group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), said that all armed groups in his country will be disbanded and no one will have weapons except the new state authorities. The decision was taken in light of the country’s interim government’s review.
The rebel leader, known as Abu Muhammad al-Jolani, made these statements at a press conference on Sunday (December 15).
He said that not all members of the rebel groups will be taken into the Syrian armed forces. There will be no compulsory military recruitment. However, in certain cases, recruitment from the rebel groups will be mandatory for a short period.
Ahmad al-Shara, noting that a proposal to increase the salaries of civil servants in Syria by up to 400 percent is under consideration, said that our main priority at the moment is to rebuild destroyed houses and return displaced people.
Meanwhile, the Syrian Central Bank has issued a decision to facilitate imports. In light of this decision, importers will be able to send money outside the country to import products approved for domestic use. However, if it conflicts with international or local rules on money laundering, the importer will be brought under the law.
Earlier on Saturday (December 14), Al-Shara said regarding the continued Israeli offensive, that the current situation in Syria, which has been devastated by a long-standing war and conflict, cannot withstand any new conflict. Our main priority at the moment is to ensure the reconstruction and stability of the country. In this situation, we should not get involved in any conflict that could lead to further destruction.
Al-Shara stressed that resolving the problem through diplomatic means is the only realistic way now. However, he warned that an “unplanned military operation” would not be beneficial to anyone.
Meanwhile, he also commented on Russia’s role in Syria. Russia’s military intervention almost a decade ago tipped the balance of the war in Assad’s favor. Recently, Russia has provided shelter to the ousted Assad.
In this regard, Ahmad Al-Shara said, “Our relations with Russia should be conducted in a way that protects the interests of both parties.”
