An Argentine court has issued arrest warrants for Myanmar junta leader Min Aung Hlaing and ousted leader Aung San Suu Kyi, who are under house arrest, on charges of “genocide” and “crimes against humanity” against the Rohingya. However, Myanmar authorities have criticized the warrant, Arab News reported.
This week, an Argentine court issued arrest warrants for Myanmar junta leader Min Aung Hlaing, former President Htin Kyaw and former elected civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi, along with military and civilian officials.
The ruling was made in a case filed in Argentina by a Rohingya advocacy group.
Regarding the arrest warrants, junta spokesman Zaw Min Tun said, “Does Argentina know Myanmar? The Myanmar government knows Argentina. ’
“We would like to advise Argentina that if they want to criticize Myanmar in accordance with the law, they should first appoint judges to the necessary and vacant positions in their internal judiciary,” he told reporters on Saturday.
Ze Min Tun’s comments were made in reference to a report published in December that said 150 judges were needed for all levels of the Buenos Aires judiciary.
The arrest warrant mentions Aung San Suu Kyi’s role as state counsellor from 2016 to 2021, when critics accused her of doing little to stop the persecution of the Rohingya.
Min Aung Hlaing is being investigated by the International Criminal Court. The International Court of Justice is investigating allegations of “genocide” against Myanmar.
