India bids farewell to Manmohan Singh with state honours

Former Indian Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh bid farewell with respect and love. His funeral was held with full state honours at Nigambodh Ghat in New Delhi on Saturday (December 28) around noon local time.

According to an NDTV report, Indian President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Bhutanese Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay paid their last respects to Manmohan Singh.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Congress leader Sonia Gandhi, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, Congress President Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi and many others were present at the time.

The politician breathed his last at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences Hospital (AIIMS) in Delhi on Thursday (December 26). He was 92 years old at the time of his death.

The death of this renowned economist cast a shadow of grief across India. Prime Minister Narendra Modi rushed to his residence. Home Minister Amit Shah was also present. Various politicians, including opposition leader Rahul Gandhi, expressed their condolences. World leaders are also expressing their condolences to his family.

All government functions were canceled on Friday following the death of Manmohan Singh. The Indian central government has declared a seven-day state mourning. During this time, flags will be flown at half-mast in government buildings. Congress Foundation Day functions have also been canceled.

He was serving as a member of the Rajya Sabha until the beginning of this year. He retired from the Rajya Sabha last April.

Manmohan Singh joined the Indian government’s Ministry of Commerce as an economic advisor in 1971. Later, he served as the Finance Minister from 1991 to 1996. Manmohan Singh served as the Prime Minister of India for two terms from 2004 to 2014.
