Magnitude 6 earthquake in Japan

A powerful earthquake struck near the Ogasawara Islands in the Pacific Ocean, south of the Japanese capital Tokyo, on Tuesday.

It was initially reported as 6 on the Richter scale. No tsunami warning has been issued.

The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) said this. The Meteorological Agency also said that the earthquake struck at 9:39 am local time.

Its origin was about 50 kilometers below the surface on Hahajima Island. There is no tsunami threat. There were no immediate reports of casualties or major damage from the earthquake.
