Myanmar’s embattled military government has extended the state of emergency for another six months.
The country’s official media reported this information on Wednesday.
The military-controlled National Defense and Security Council extended the state of emergency to give the junta more time to collect population data for voter registration, Mayawaddi media reported. The junta has said it will hold national elections next year.
In February 2021, the military overthrew the elected civilian government of Aung San Suu Kyi and seized power. That year, the military declared a year-long state of emergency in the country. The state of emergency has been extended every six months since that period expired. Because the protest movement in the country has now turned into an armed rebellion.
Regarding the latest state of emergency, the junta said it was necessary to restore peace and stability due to ongoing terrorist activities.
