The amended Citizenship Act came into effect in India
The Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) came into effect across India nearly four years after the bill was passed. Ahead of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, the Union Home Ministry announced the official launch of the CAA by issuing a notification in this regard on Monday.
The Act was passed by Parliament in December 2019.
Last month, Union Home Minister Amit Shah had said that this law is for granting citizenship, it is not for taking away citizenship. Its aim is to grant Indian citizenship to persecuted non-Muslim migrants. CAA was launched after the Home Minister’s comment.
Meanwhile, Trinamool leader Mamata Banerjee held a press conference just before the government’s notification on CAA said that there will be a movement if someone’s rights are taken away. But I will see the law first. If I see discrimination against any class of people, then I will oppose it. Do not tolerate any discrimination.
He also said that if something is good in the country, we congratulate him, but if something is bad in the country, we cannot support him. I will tell everyone, don’t be afraid, don’t worry. When the Aadhaar card was being cancelled, we stood still. Even today, if someone’s rights are taken away, Trinamool is the only party that will be the first to move on this issue.
The people of Thakurnagar in Matua, North Twenty-four Parganas district of West Bengal rejoiced after getting the news about the implementation of CAA law across India.
It should be noted that the Indian Parliament passed the amended Citizenship Act on December 11, 2019. According to this law, non-Muslim citizens (Hindu, Sikh, Christian, Jain, Parsi, Buddhist) who came from Bangladesh, Afghanistan and Pakistan before 31 December 2014 will get Indian citizenship.
This evening Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Nishit Pramanak told the official media that no citizen of India will lose his citizenship. It is a law to give people citizenship, not a law to take away their citizenship. I will tell everyone to stay calm.
