Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has welcomed the ceasefire agreement in Gaza. He said the agreement, announced on Wednesday, will pave the way for lasting peace and stability for “Palestinian brothers and sisters” and the entire region, the Anadolu Agency reported on Wednesday (January 15).
Erdogan said in a statement on his Twitter account that “Turkey will stand by Gaza and make every effort to help them rebuild.”
He added that “Turkey welcomes the ceasefire agreement between Hamas and Israel.”
Erdogan praised the courage of the people of Gaza, saying, “We salute the heroic people of Gaza who defended their land and freedom against Israel’s illegal and inhumane aggression.”
He also noted that Turkey has never left its “Palestinian brothers and sisters” alone in their fight against oppression and will continue to stand by them in the future.
Earlier, Qatari Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman announced the mediators’ efforts to make the Gaza ceasefire agreement a success. The agreement will take effect next Sunday.
According to the Gaza Health Ministry, more than 46,000 Palestinians have lost their lives so far in the Israeli aggression. Although the Health Ministry did not specifically distinguish between Hamas fighters and civilians, it said most of the dead were women and children.
On October 7, 2023, Hamas fighters in Gaza launched an attack on southern Israel, killing about 1,200 Israeli civilians and kidnapping 250.
Millions of Gazans are struggling for shelter due to the relentless Israeli attacks, which have deepened the humanitarian crisis.
Meanwhile, doctors in Gaza said that at least 32 people have been killed in Israeli bombardment of Gaza since the agreement was announced.
