UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Monday called for a cease-fire as the holy fasting month of Ramadan begins in the Israel-Hamas war in the Gaza Strip and the conflict in Sudan.

He called for the release of hostages held by Hamas and the “removal of all obstacles to ensure the necessary speed and massive delivery of life-saving aid” to Gaza, where the United Nations has warned that a quarter of the population is on the brink of famine.

“International humanitarian law is a shambles,” he told reporters. “And the threat of an Israeli attack on Rafah could plunge the people of Gaza into an even deeper circle of hell.”
