The Israeli military has released a video of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar preparing for an extended stay in an underground tunnel hours before Hamas’ surprise attack on October 7. Sinwar is accused of masterminding the attack that sparked the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip. The military announced that Sinwar was killed by Israel in a targeted operation earlier this week.
Footage released by the Israeli military on Saturday shows Sinwar, his wife and children heading to an underground bunker beneath their family home in Gaza on the night of October 6.
According to Israeli military spokesman Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari, the family appeared to be settling in for an extended stay.
The video shows Sinwar and his son repeatedly climbing up and down a tunnel, carrying food, water, pillows, a plasma screen and a mattress, as they navigate the tunnel. The footage clearly shows Sinwar’s foresight and preparation for the long hours he spent underground during the Hamas attack the following day.
The Israeli military had previously shared drone footage of Sinwar’s final moments. Sinwar, who had not been seen in public since the start of the war, was reportedly found by Israeli forces during heavy shelling in the southern Gaza city of Rafah.
The drone footage shows the wounded Sinwar throwing an object at the drone as Israeli forces surrounded him in a destroyed building. Footage has also been released of Israeli tanks firing on the building where Sinwar is believed to have been hiding.
An Israeli autopsy determined that Sinwar died of a gunshot wound to the head, according to a report in The New York Times.
Yahya Sinwar took over leadership in Gaza after the death of Ismail Haniyeh at the start of the war. Sinwar had a history of military and political ties to Hamas and was considered one of the movement’s most powerful figures. His death is being seen as a major blow to Hamas.
