Recent Turkish airstrikes have created a dire humanitarian crisis in northeastern Syria. Demand for water has skyrocketed in the long-running war-torn country.
Electricity and water supply systems have collapsed as a result of the Turkish attack. Severe drought has occurred. Which has affected the lives of millions of people. According to BBC news on Tuesday, 1 million people have been deprived of water due to the collapse of the water supply system in Turkey.
According to the report, from October 2019 to January 2024, Türkiye carried out more than 100 attacks on Kurdish-controlled areas in northeastern Syria. The attacks targeted oil fields, gas supply facilities, power plants and critical infrastructure.
Türkiye claims the attack is aimed at destroying Kurdish separatist groups’ sources of income and power. The attack caused a power outage in Syria’s Hasakah province, shutting down the main water supply station. Residents collect water from 20 kilometers away through tankers and often fight to collect water.
A tanker driver said, ‘Water here is more valuable than gold. People need a lot more water here.’
The people of northeastern Syria are currently facing a dire humanitarian crisis. War, drought and Turkish military operations made their lives more dangerous. International assistance is urgently needed to help them.
Meanwhile, climate change is compounding the consequences of the Syria-Türkiye conflict. NATO, the military alliance of the North Atlantic countries, has previously called on Turkey to refrain from attacking Kurdish-inhabited areas.
