The Pakistani government has filed eight cases against Imran Khan, Bushra Bibi and hundreds of activists of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party in connection with the protests in Islamabad from November 24 to November 27. They have been charged with terrorism, attacking police and violating Section 144.
On Sunday (November 24), thousands of PTI workers marched towards Islamabad in response to Imran Khan’s call for a ‘final protest’. Imran Khan’s wife Bushra Bibi and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur led the protest. However, the PTI alleged that about 1,000 activists were arrested along the way.
After reaching Islamabad on Wednesday (November 27), paramilitary forces opened fire to disperse the protesters. At least eight workers were killed, the PTI alleged. Information Minister Ataullah Tarar said, “No shots were fired during the protests and no bodies were brought to the hospital. Although PTI leaders have said that 10 to 200 people were killed, this is not true.”
The Pakistani government has called Imran Khan’s protests “corpse politics.”
Meanwhile, Pakistani law enforcement agencies have arrested a journalist named Matiullah Jan on charges of terrorism and drug trafficking. Matiullah Jan was investigating possible deaths in the recent protests.
The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N)-led government came to power in February. However, the PTI refused to form the government, alleging military intervention. Since then, the PTI has been protesting against Imran Khan’s release and challenging the election results.
It is worth noting that after three days of tension, the protest program was canceled on Wednesday (November 27) evening after Imran’s supporters reached the red zone D-Chowk area of the capital Islamabad.
Analysts say that this incident has further increased tension in the political arena of Pakistan. At the same time, it is also endangering the security and democratic environment of the country.
According to the Geo News report, the cases have been registered in various police stations of Islamabad including Shahzad Town, Sihala, Khanna, Shams Colony, Noon, Nilor, Tarnal, Banigala. The names of Imran Khan, his wife Bushra Bibi and the central leadership of PTI are mentioned in these cases.
