Min Aung Hlaing, head of Myanmar’s junta government, has been made acting president. This was reported by Al Jazeera in a report citing the country’s army.

According to reports, Acting President Myint Shwe has taken medical leave. Along with that, he handed over the responsibility to the junta chief Min Aung Hlaing.

Min Aung Hlaing received a letter from the acting president’s office on Monday (July 22) regarding his new duties, the country’s state television MRTV said in an announcement.

Acting President Myint Shwe is ill, the letter said. He needs treatment. That’s why he is on vacation. Min Aung Hlaing will serve in his place until he recovers.

On February 1, 2021, the military seized power in Myanmar after overthrowing the democratically elected government in a military coup led by Min Aung Hlaing. The new government was named the State Administration Council, headed by Army Chief Min Aung Hlaing.

Myint Shwe was vice president in the democratically elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi. After the coup, he took over as the acting president of the military government.

State media reported last week that 73-year-old Mint Shwe is suffering from ‘psychomotor retardation and malnutrition’. He is receiving treatment since the beginning of this year. Due to this he is not able to continue his regular activities.
