A terrible bacteria has spread in Japan. Infection with group A streptococcus (Gas) bacteria can cause streptococcal toxic shock syndrome (STSS). If this bacteria spreads in the human body, it can kill within 48 hours.
According to information from the National Institute of Infectious Diseases, Japan’s infectious disease research organization, 977 people have been infected with this disease in the country from January to June 2 this year. Last year, 941 people were infected with STSS. Since 1999, it has been recording the incidence and death data of the disease.
If this trend of infection continues, the number of infected people will reach 2500 this year. The disease has an alarmingly high mortality rate of 30 percent.
Officials at the National Institute of Infectious Diseases said that the number of patients suffering from STDs in Japan is increasing every year.
There are several species of this bacterium. Some species mainly affect children. The affected child’s throat becomes swollen and painful. However, some species mainly attack people aged 50 years or older.
Infections of these species first cause sore throat and then muscle pain. The hands, feet and face swell, the blood pressure drops and eventually the muscles rot, breathing becomes difficult, the limbs become deformed and the patient dies.
Ken Kikuchi, professor of infectious diseases at Tokyo Women’s Medical University, said that a patient can die within 48 hours if these symptoms appear.
Professor Ken Kikuchi advises keeping hands clean and not leaving any open wounds on the body to protect against infection.
