Syrian Foreign Minister Assad Hassan al-Shibani said on Saturday that his country is deeply optimistic about rejoining the Arab League. Syria’s new ruling party is trying to reassert its position in the regional political arena.
Foreign Minister al-Shibani spoke with Arab League Assistant Secretary-General Hossam Zaki at a joint press conference in Damascus. He said that work is underway to activate Syria’s participation in coordination with Arab League member states.
Arab News reported this in a report on Saturday (January 18).
Foreign Minister al-Shibani said that Syria has always been an important part of the Arab world and we believe that our return to the Arab League will bring positive results for the entire region.
Arab League Assistant Secretary-General Hossam Zaki said that discussions are underway among member states and necessary steps are being taken to reactivate Syria’s participation.
He said that we hope that this step will open a new chapter not only for Syria but for the entire region.
Syria was expelled from the Arab League in 2011 during the civil war. But after the fall of Bashar al-Assad, hopes of the country’s return to the Arab League under new leadership have been revived.
Observers believe that Syria’s return to the Arab League could play a key role in the war-torn country’s reconstruction efforts. It would also open up new avenues for dealing with international sanctions and the crisis.
