China under the worst flood of the century

After heavy rains, the worst flood of the century has been feared in China. Major rivers, waterways and reservoirs in the country’s Guangdong province are overflowing with water. China’s state-run CCTV News reported on Sunday that water levels in some parts of the river and tributary basins of Xinjiang and Beijing had risen to a level that was rare, with local weather officials describing the situation as “horrendous”. As it is likely to happen only once in 50 years. CCTV News also reported that China’s Ministry of Water Resources has issued emergency instructions.
Officials in Guangdong have urged departments and municipalities at the local level to start making emergency plans to avoid natural disasters. Disaster response funds and other items have also been quickly mobilized to ensure that people affected by disasters have access to food, clothing, water and safe shelter.
Guangdong is China’s main export center and also one of the commercial and business centers. The province has been lashed by heavy rains and stormy winds for several days. It has also affected other parts of China. The heavy rain that started on Saturday night is still going on. It inundated many parts of central and northern Guangdong, including the cities of Zhaoqing, Shaguan, Qingguan and Jiangmen. Rescue workers have been sent to rescue people in those places. As many as 65 landslides have also occurred due to heavy rains. China often faces such natural disasters. However, the country has been witnessing severe floods, droughts and severe wildfires for the past few years. China’s local and international media reported that the situation is dire this year.
