A boat carrying migrants and refugees has sunk off the coast of Yemen in the Red Sea. There were 45 passengers in it. Only four people were found after the accident and the rest are missing. The United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) in Yemen reported on Thursday (July 25).
According to Reuters, the boat sank due to strong winds and overcrowding, UNHCR said. The UN agency also said it is working with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) to provide assistance and protection to survivors. No details were given about the rest of the refugees.
Earlier, at least 49 migrants died and 140 went missing when a boat carrying 260 migrants from Somalia sank off the coast of Yemen last June.
Thousands of migrants try to reach the Gulf countries every year from the Horn of Africa (Eritrea, Somalia, Ethiopia) via the Red Sea. The United Nations Migration Agency considers it “one of the most dangerous migration routes in the world.”
According to UN data, 97,000 migrants from the Horn of Africa arrived in Yemen last year.
