Karim Khan, the chief counsel of the International Criminal Court (ICC), requested the issuance of an arrest warrant against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu last May on charges of Israeli war crimes and crimes against humanity in the Gaza Strip. Until now, like the United States, Britain has been opposing this move by the ICC. However, the new Prime Minister of Britain, Keir Starmer, can withdraw this objection by withdrawing from this position of the outgoing Conservative government.
Al-Jazeera reported this information on a report of the New York Times on Thursday (July 25).
The New York Times reported two sources with knowledge of the British government’s policy.
The Gaza war began last October. More than 39,000 Palestinians have been killed in this war. However, the United States and Britain blindly supported Israel in the Western world.
But now if Britain withdraws its objection to the ICC arrest warrant against Netanyahu, it will be seen as a major change in its Israel policy.
Earlier, the British government resumed emergency financial assistance to UNRWA, the United Nations agency for Palestinian refugees. The country stopped this financial assistance in the wake of a complaint last January.
