Calls For Advancing Women’s Rights Dominate International Women’s Day In Afghanistan former President Hamid Karzai

On International Women’s Day, prominent Afghan figures, including former President Hamid Karzai and Abdullah Abdullah, advocate for the improvement of women’s situations in Afghanistan, urging the caretaker government to reopen schools and universities for girls.

In a statement, former President Karzai emphasized the crucial role of education and job opportunities for women in achieving progress and independence. He called for creating an environment that fosters the growth and flourishing of the bright talents of Afghan girls. Karzai highlighted the historical significance of Afghan women, noting their substantial contributions to the struggles for independence and their role as responsible members of society.

Abdullah Abdullah, the former chairman of the High Council for National Reconciliation, underscored women’s duty to educate the next generation and guide society towards goodness and success.

Adding to the chorus, the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) issued a statement calling on the caretaker government to lift restrictions imposed on women in the country. Roza Otunbayeva, the head of UNAMA, emphasized the global theme of “invest in women” on this International Women’s Day, urging increased efforts to unlock progress.

The World Health Organization in Afghanistan echoed the sentiment, stating that investing in Afghan women is fundamental to building an inclusive society, and the progress of Afghan women will benefit everyone.

The European Union also issued a message on the occasion, affirming its commitment to equality, rights, and opportunities for women worldwide.

Zabihullah Mujahid, the spokesman for the Islamic Emirate, reiterated the Islamic Emirate’s consistent stance on women’s rights. He highlighted effective steps taken by the Islamic Emirate, including addressing issues such as inheritance rights, forced marriages, and the autonomy of widows. Mujahid emphasized that the Islamic Emirate remains committed to upholding women’s rights within the framework of Islam.

International Women’s Day, originating from a labor movement in North America and Europe, has become a significant global event recognized by the United Nations, symbolizing the ongoing struggle for women’s rights and gender equality worldwide.
