A Chinese military delegation visited Maldives, Sri Lanka and Nepal. During this visit, discussions were held on strengthening cooperation on bilateral defense issues with South Asian countries, Beijing said.
In the face of pressure from the president of Maldives, India started withdrawing its troops from the country this week. Due to this, the relationship between the two countries has deteriorated.
Meanwhile, in a statement on Wednesday (March 13), Beijing said that a Chinese military delegation visited the Maldives, Sri Lanka and Nepal. The delegation visited three countries from March 4 to 13. First, they went to the Maldives and held a meeting with the country’s president, Mohammad Muiz. A defense treaty was later signed between the two countries. Under the deal, Beijing will provide free arms to Male.
The delegation then visited Sri Lanka and Nepal. During this visit, discussions were held with the three countries about strengthening cooperation on defense issues in the future, Beijing said. The countries are also said to have reached a consensus to deepen their ties.
Analysts say that China is creating a security zone to expand its dominance in the Indian Ocean. Beijing wants to increase defense cooperation with South Asian countries mainly to keep India under pressure. In the meantime, the pro-Chinese position in the Maldives has worried India. China’s influence is also growing in Maldives’ neighboring Sri Lanka. At the same time, Beijing has close ties with Nepal.
On the contrary, China is having a bitter relationship with India day by day over the border issue. The recent visit of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Arunachal was not well received by Beijing. Because China claims Arunachal as its province. Although India claims, Arunachal was and will remain its part.
