A Chinese national who fled to Thailand for allegedly defrauding her of 1.5 million yuan has been arrested. Thai immigration police detained her based on a tip-off.
The 30-year-old accused woman, identified as Shi, is accused of taking 1.5 million yuan (US$210,000) from six people between 2016 and 2019 under the pretext of offering them jobs as ‘flight attendants’. She later failed to return their money.
Shi fled China and went into hiding in Thailand to protect herself. She underwent several plastic surgeries to change her appearance but was ultimately unsuccessful. Thai immigration police arrested her on October 7.
Police said that Shi went to Thailand from China on a 15-day tourist visa in late 2022. She has not returned to the country since then. She has undergone several facial plastic surgeries as there is an Interpol arrest warrant against her.
The woman lived in a Bangkok apartment. Local residents told police that the 30-year-old woman often wore a mask to cover her face.
Immigration officers went to her apartment after learning about the incident. She had come down to pick up a food delivery. At that time, the police asked to check her passport and detained her.
