At least 11 people have died after a massive fire broke out in a five-storey residential and commercial building in the Philippines’ Chinatown province.

A local community official said that the fire broke out on Friday (August 2) night.

Firefighters said the fire was brought under control about three hours after it broke out. The fire came under control around 7:30 am. However, no information was immediately available about the cause of the fire.

It was not immediately clear how many people were trapped in the building. It is also feared that the death toll may increase.

In August last year, 16 people died in a fire in a residential and warehouse building in the Philippines. Apart from this, a major fire broke out in the capital’s historic Central Post Office building in May.

Also in 2017, a fire at a shopping mall in southern Davao City killed 37 call center agents and a security officer.
