The government of Turkey has banned the social media platform Instagram because of the news of the death of Ismail Haniyeh, the top leader and head of the political wing of Hamas, the group that controls the besieged Gaza Strip in Palestine, and the posts of those who condoled the incident were ‘censored’.
The country’s Information and Communication Minister Fahrettin Altun confirmed this information in a statement on Friday (October 2). He also condemned the world’s most popular media.
Altun said in the statement, “There is no news related to Ismail Haniya’s martyrdom on Instagram. Those who wanted to post condolence on his death, complained that they were unable to post on Instagram. It is definitely happening because of censorship.’
“We strongly condemn any institution that hinders people’s freedom of expression. Such censorship is never acceptable. Instagram has been suspended indefinitely in Turkey from today.
Like many other countries in the world, the most popular social media in Turkey is Instagram. According to the statistics office of Turkey, the total population of the country is 830 thousand. Of these, 580,000 people use Instagram.
Incidentally, Ismail Haniya, the top leader and head of the political wing of Hamas, went to Tehran to attend the inauguration ceremony of the new president of Iran, Massoud Pezeshkian. Haniya was killed along with one of his bodyguards at the residence in Tehran where he was staying.
So far no one has claimed responsibility for the murder, but almost everyone is sure that the Israeli intelligence agency is directly involved in the murder.
