Death toll from Typhoon Trami in the Philippines has passed 100

The death toll from Typhoon Trami, which hit the northeastern coast of the Philippines, has risen to more than 100. The country’s disaster management agency said Trami, the deadliest storm of the year, hit on Friday. More than half a million people have been displaced by the storm.

Al Jazeera reported on Sunday (October 27).

At least 138 people have been killed so far, the report said. Rescuers are rushing to isolated villages to search for dozens of missing people.

Provincial police chief Jacinto Malinao told AFP that 55 people had died in Batangas province, south of Manila, as of Sunday. However, unofficial sources put the death toll in that province higher.

“Swamps have come down from the hills in the town of Balete, flooding houses,” said Malinao, the regional police chief for Batangas province. Many houses have been swept away.

Police in the Bicol region in the central Philippines, the worst-hit, have recorded 38 deaths, most of them from drowning.

“We are still receiving many requests and we are trying to save as many people as possible. Hopefully, there will be no more deaths,” Bicol regional police director Andre Dizon told AFP.

“There are still many people trapped on their roofs and in high places,” Dizon added.
